Noise Sharing Plan

The addition of a third runway will change how aircraft operate at Melbourne Airport, affecting which runways are used and how aircraft noise is experienced across surrounding communities. With three runways in operation, there will be options for how arriving and departing aircraft are managed, creating opportunities to share aircraft noise.

To manage this, Melbourne Airport is required to develop a Noise Sharing and Airspace Concept Plan.

The Noise Sharing Plan is one approach to managing aircraft noise impacts and is required as a condition by the Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government for the construction of the third runway.

Through carefully designed flight paths and runway operations, the Noise Sharing Plan aims to give communities periods of respite from aircraft noise.

Melbourne Airport has appointed independent consultants Trax and GHD to create a Noise Sharing Plan. See how they will be consulting with the community throughout the process here. Aviation industry stakeholders will also be engaged, and more information about that is available here.

The information collected in 2025 will inform the draft Noise Sharing Plan, which will be open for public consultation in mid-late 2026.

Melbourne Airport has appointed independent consultants Trax and GHD to deliver the Noise Sharing Plan.

For more information on Trax and GHD’s Community and Stakeholder Engagement Plan see here.

Trax and GHD are leading the community and stakeholder engagement to support diverse views being heard and captured in the development of noise sharing options. Trax will also develop and evaluate the technical airspace design and operating strategies, leading the engagement with industry stakeholders.

During October and November 2025, the team was out and about talking to Melbourne communities and aviation industry about noise sharing.

Communities also had an opportunity to complete an online survey to inform the draft Noise Sharing Plan. The draft plan will be available for feedback in mid-late 2026.
